    Hi Richard,In the future it would be helpful to post the shooting specs which will help us to better analyze what you have done. Good effort but overall the image appears a bit soft.
    There is noise in the backround which could be due to a large crop or very high ISO. I might try some noise reduction. Finally the top of the bird is lit rather harshly lit and is causing the area to lose some detail. If you can get the subject in even lighting it would add to the images strength. Keep going...

    Arrghh details added - thanks for critique as usual :)

    Ran noise red. in PS CS4; bird was on the ground in midday light so once again let down with no fill flash

    Hi Richard - agree with Daves Comments - when starting out try and use the kiss principle!!

    Get the sun at your back and look for possible subjects - even lighting is much easier to work with - very easy to get discouraged by the lack of apparent success - when I first started I took my camera every were with me and i mean everywhere - took heaps of shots - practically no keepers - point of the exercise was to nail exposure and how compensation worked in different circumstances.

    Pick your subjects and practice practice practice!
