Hi Richard - IMHO - you are not going to recover the highlights in the BG - The camera can only capture a certain dynamic range - unlike our eyes, ay most it's about 10 stops. So when the scene you are trying to capture falls outside this range you have two choices - expose for the subject and let the rest fall were it may or expose for the BG and let the subject fall were it may - obviously here you want to do the first.
As mentioned some fill flash would have helped - could have underexposed a little and used the fill flash to illuminate the bird.
Good looking bird - does look a little soft, some additional sharpening might help. As for the highlights in the BG- Aint much you are going to be able to do - IMHO!

Trogons are amazing birds, sometimes very hard to find. In this case it was with a female close to it's nest BUT the cover is so thick you cant reposition.
I'll keep posting shots as I have learned much this last week.
