    Default Noise Reduction

I am strugling to understand why it appears that Adobe has a better noise reduction facility in LR3 (I am trying the 30 day download) than CS4. Is this the case, and if so is it also improved in CS5?

I have tried various test downloads and none of them seem to do much else other than reduce detail and blur. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

BTW my cameras are EOS1D MkIV and MkIII

Hi Ken - LR3 came out after CS4 so one would assume the NR algorithms have been improved since the release of CS4 - and I would imagine CS5 would be at the very least comparable to LR3 if not better.

Or they might put a better algorithm in one software package and a poor algorithm in another to "encourage" users to buy both!!

You think they would do that? :)

As I understand it LR3 & PS CS5 use the same algorithms for RAW conversion and noise reduction. At least that is what they have done historically. Adobe does not update older versions of either Camera RAW or LR with the latest algorithms you must buy the latest version of LR or PS CS5.

I found that noise reduction in ACR was much improved in the CS5 version. I haven't tried NR inside Photoshop, because I use Imagenomic Noiseware once I get out of ACR.

I think LR3 has much better NR than the other 2 versions. As pointed out above LR3 and CS5 came out at about the same time; both use the same ACR engine.

    I could believe that:D

Adobe certainly does not have a loyalty programme, I would not wish to figure out the amount I have spent on upgrades over the past 10 years.

It seems that nobody is sure, the prices outside the US are really expensive. If it is good enough for David, i'll try a test of Imagenomic.

Are you using the Standard or Pro....the standalone or the plug in?

    Thanks

I use noiseware also. The standard is 8 bits the pro 16 bit. Does make a difference in the processing.

    regards.
