I photographed this beauty at the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory where they only breed butterflies that live in Canada with my Canon 5D Mark II. ISO 800, f/6.3, 1/200 sec, EF24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM Macro, 105mm, Evaluative Metering, Auto exposure, Auto WB, No Flash. Comments Welcome........

Hi Richard - Nice - Imagine you were restricted a little in angles etc - but this looks good - As the butterfly is pretty much all on the same Plane F4 has not resulted in too many problems.
Looks sharp, head area could use a tad more sharpening perhaps? Like the diagonal leaf and the composition.

There is a weird looking straight line on the RHS about 3/4 the way up and out from the Antenna.
    :)

Lance, thanks for the comments. I didn't see that line, it is a clone artifact. I got as far as I could into the bushes to get on the same plane and it looked sharp so I was happy with it......

Hi Rich, Agree with Lance regarding sharpness and I like the subjects position in the frame. The backround is well blurred but there are some brighter areas I would prefer toned down.
A good way to see how bright the areas are is to put a black black screen around the image in PS...

Good angle Richard, might desaturate the oranges a bit. Must have been hot in there!

    Hey Richard,
You didn't have to go to Niagara falls to see these guys.....I go to butterfly world evey year a couple of times I am down in your neck of the woods....many times a lot easier to isolate!
IMO....the DOF got you....as the BF was facing slightly away....DOF falloff is huge at such close range. Pulling up the pop up flash and going to 1/125....gets you to around f11 easy.....body and eye qill now be tack. Just some food for thought if you go practice at BW!

The one thing I miss sometimes is the popup flash. None on the 5D Mark II and to carry one is a pain when sightseeing. By the way Roman, lived here my entire life and have never been to Butterfly World. 50 lashes for me......
