    Default Anhinga Drying Off

Caught this guy on another 16 mile trip through the swamp. He just had some lunch and was trying to dry off before taking flight. I removed a small stump that was a short distance to the left of the perch...could take it or leave it.

Hi Colin - love the outstretched wings - exposure looks good - nice detail in the blacks.
Maybe a little more sharpening - might have stopped down a little more - if that BG was not too close - had enough SS to support it. Wide open you really have to nail your focus point and let the rest fall were it may.
Head looks just a little soft maybe.
    Nice work from a kayak!!!!

Thanks, Lance! I'm always trying to watch my shutter speed from the kayak. But like you said, I probably could have spared some speed for DOF. But most of the focus problem came from him constantly moving his head. It was really hard to nail that head with the AF point.

We shot some video that day if anyone is interested.

Really like the dark BG amd the pose. Don't know how you manage to kayak and get shots. Guess you keep your camera in a dry sack?

Thanks, Jackie! I carry several dry bags, but I mount my 500mm on a tripod in the kayak. Combine that with the flash/brackets....etc and it's just too much for a dry bag to cover. When the rain comes (and it always does!!) I just put a couple of trash bags over the whole setup until the bad weather passes. It's a cheap and "trashy" solution, but it's been tested and tried and works every time. The only problem is my vision is even more obscured, and I may have collided with a few trees right in front of me which I never saw. :)

Hi Colin, Not the easiest technique shooting from a kayak! Nice soft light with a centered comp that works for me. I like the backround which is dark and muted but the viewer still knows there is foliage in the rear.
I agree with Lance that the image is just a bit soft which a round of sharpening might help. Very good detail throughout...

Amazing video. Liked that cabin in the middle of NOWHERE! And enjoyed the Partitia.

Amazing image, loved the video, and particularly enjoyed the play-by-play in the video. These are some of the thought processes that I have as I paddle around (without a tripod though). And really? You play an amazing banjo, too (my husband plays banjo too, and really enjoyed your ability). Such talent.

Thanks for the comments, Dave. I might try to repost a sharpened version to see if it satisfies.

Thanks for viewing and for the comments, Sandra!

looks very nice, lovely wing spread, would sharpen a bit more.

Very nice video too, enjoyed viewing. Hopefully will checkout the sanctuary at some point, will bring more booze ;)

Come on by, Arash, we'll take you right to it. I would recommend water though, as it's a long day in the kayak. :)

I like the photo and agree with the majority of the critiques. Am amazed at the sharpness given the kayak platform. Hard enough to nail the head with the focus point on stable ground. Don't think I would risk it myself. What kind of kayak are you using? I have a small Old Town but I cannot imagine entering and exiting it with a DSLR/500mm combination.

Thanks Dave. See the YouTube link above for my setup. I use a 12' Native Watercraft. I really don't view it as a "risk" much at all anymore. I'm very comfortable with it, I've gotten many good shots and it's all insured on top of that.

Looks pretty stable to me. My kayak would not work. Loved the video.
