    Default Interaction: The Interloper

    Hi Everyone,
Here is another image from my recent trip to the Farne Islands. What makes this image for me is the feet of the puffin on the left...
    1D 3 300 f/2.8 + 1.4
    ISO 320
    f/4 1/4000
    Exp comp @ + 2/3
    HH
Light was harsh...rocks extensively cleaned up - too much puffin poo :D
    Look forward to your C & C's.
    Best to all,
    Nicki
PS Looking at this now, does it need a touch more black??

    Nicki:

Very fun. Yes, the feet on the left are cool. I didn't check the histogram, but it certainly looks to my eye that you are close to zero in some areas already, but if you don't mind the shadows being blocked under the rocks, a bit more black would give the image a little more snap.
For personal taste, I might consider a modest crop off the free space at top.

Hope to see more of these fun guys.
    Cheers

Hi Randy, thanks so much for your comments. What you mean by 'close to zero'?
Yes, I do have some more fun pictures of these guys!!

    Nicki:

On the histogram, a value of zero represents absolute black, 255 absolute white. I meant that the blacks under the rocks and maybe on the shoulder of the right bird are already almost pure black.
    Sorry I wasn't clearer.

    Cheers

Looks all a bit 'light' to me Nicki, with no real depth, initially it looks under exposed? However, I do like the interaction.

I do feel that by removing the 'guano' this does not truly reflect the location and most visitors to the islands have their first experience from the very strong 'aroma' followed by the sightings of Guillemots, Razorbills, Seals etc, peppering the rocks and face of the islands. For me, I would leave it in, as that is a true reflection of the location.

Randy, thanks so much for the explanation - much clearer now :)
Hi Steve, I checked the raw file and the exposure looks just about perfect (IMHO ;)). I often find that for some reason my posts here look lighter than my tiff files
As for the guano, I take your point, but this is how I prefer to present the image. I agree - that smell is quite something...
    Best,

That fine Nicki on here, but would have a second file 'as is' for any RPS submissions. ;)

    Steve:

If an image is "light", doesn't that mean that it's OVERexposed?:)

My view of the histogram shows that there is no significant exposure problem, but I would enhance the contrast by making a good "S curve" in PS curves.

Technical quibbling aside, this is a charming, well composed and sharp image. Thanks Nicki for sharing it with us!

Norm, thank you, I'm glad that you enjoyed the image :)
Steve, this is not the kind of image that I would generally submit to the RPS. My ARPS was awarded for Visual Art - you will find it on my website as 'The Ghosts of Barrow Wake'.
    Best regards,
    Nicki

The interaction and sharpness look very good. It looks quite bright on my monitor, too. If TIFF and jpgs look very different then it might be time to recalibrate the monitor. :)

    Nicki:

I hope you don't mind this repost, but I've made a couple simple corrections using levels and curves in PS CS5 to increase the image contrast. I think this might be better, but the key point is that your image file successfully captured the data needed to make the adjustments. Again, TFS!:)

Hi Nicki, I like how the two on either side of the landing puffin are looking at him. Lovely landing posture, and I have to agree this could go a little darker. Norm's repost works well.

Lovely image Nicki, you managed to get this without any strong shadows (all mine had shadows on the white plumage). I would suggest the image is a little bright, I have played with Curves and Shadows Brightness and have to confess I think Norm did a better job than I did (it is Friday and I have had a couple of glasses of merlot!!).
I do get the impression that the re-post is just a little oversaturated on the feet and there appears to be a faint blue cast. Once again a great image - which island and what time of day did you get this shot - I will have to return next year on the annual pilgrimage.;)

Hi guys, thank you for your comments and suggestions. Norm, I really appreciate that you took the time to make the adjustments - I think that the image is greatly improved! :)
Jon, this was taken on Staple Island a couple of weeks ago. There is an old tumbled-down wall (I think) there and the puffins were taking off and landing on it. I was on the Billy Shiel trip, so we were there from about 11-1. It is a shame that the islands can't be accessed earlier or later in the day. This was my first trip - I'll definitely go back next year!
    Best,
    Nicki
