Hi Karen, Welcome to the forum.
I realise what you mean by not being a photographer but a lover of nature. If you care to improve your photographic skills this is a good place for you to be.
I'm not sure if you work in Photoshop or do any correction but I will comment on the image as if you do. The YCNH can be a great subject. It's pose looks good with branches framing the subject.
In photography light is everything and as you stated this was taken before the sun came up. With warm, early light this image would have greatly improved due to detail and color being brought up.
If you have PS skills and have no ethical issues I would remove the out of focus tree on the left.
Look forward to seeing more....
Hi Karen Big Warm Welcome !!! You do have an eye for composition and that is difficult to teach .. PS and tech settings are easy !! Followed suggestions and made corrections Just lighten with shadow/highlight, small contrast increase then removed some leafs !!! Looking forward to the next one !!!
Hi Karen - a big warm welcome to BPN - do not hesitate to jump right in and leave comments on other peoples images (No better or faster way to improve your own skills) all we ask is that you say what it is you like or dont like about the image.
Nice first post - like the way the trees frame the subject. Agree with Dave the addition of that nice early morning glow would have transformed this.
The head looks just a tad softer than the body making me think maybe the point of focus was not on the head/eye area - important when working wide open.
Also think I might be seeing a little bit of a halo around the beak/bill - oversharpening or shadow/highlight can cause this.
Nice first post and nice to see you participating on BPN. I remember the day this photo was taken. Overcast sky for the whole day. We still had a lot of fun in this beautiful place.
I agree with the comments and I like the repost from Al.
Enjoy the forum, read the comments on other pictures, comment them too and you will learn a lot.
