Went to Buck Gardens yesterday with Roman and found it a challenging morning. I have rarely photographed insects and found it interesting to try and shoot a respectable image of a dragonfly which I've seen so many posted on the site.
I finally had one that seemed to cooperate.

Hey Dave, for rarely photographing insects I think you good with this one. Nice touch with the water drops on the Hosta flower. Too bad about the OOF front wing, but it does not bother me.
This may seem like a dumb question, but physically, how far away were you when you shot this? I love that the dragonfly's eyes, they mirror the drops of water in many ways and gives balance.
Hi Sandra, Not a dumb question at all. I was using a 200 macro on a D300 . I would say 3-4 ft.
At this angle very difficult to get the front wings sharp unless they were upright and almost parallel to the body...
Nice and sharp with a great BG. Don't think you could ever cover this DOF in one shot, unless as you say, the wings are up. Nice exposure and colour palette Dave.
Hi:
Nice picture, the head and the body seems quite sharp, don't worry about the OOF leaves, at the distance you took the photo the depht of field for a 200 mm lens at F22 on a APS-C bodie is 7,5 cm aprox, so is imposible to keep the whole wings sharp.
I like the colors, the layout and the rain drops add an extra. Good!
Hi Dave - love it - never going to get enough DOF (unless the wings were on the same plane) unless you focus stack - Tack a number of shots with different focus points and combine them all into the one shot in PP. Photoshop will handle it and there are a number of stand alone programs that will also do it.
Rain drops add to the shot :)
