The white flanks have almost no detail and I tried fixing this with Aperture but could not figure it out! If someone has any help with that that would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I tried running the standard NR that comes with Aperture and it made absolutely no difference to the image! Any comments on that?
Angle and eye contact look very good. Some of the highlights look a bit overexposed and I would sharpen the bird more. I would run NR only on the BG, you can do that with the NR in PS.
Hay Alvan, you've got a nice subject here, with a great low angle. Nice head turn showing off the yellow eye. As for the white flanks, its hard to tell if there is any details to recover without seeing what the original histogram looks like, but as a first step try reducing the overall exposure as the image looks a bit light overall. That by itself will likely not "fix" the white flank problem but it is one step closer to it. Now I'm not familiar with Aperture, but if it is like most RAW converters you should have some options to play with just the highlights, or some sort of other highlights recovery method. Keep in mind those whites may be blown beyond recovery, so you'll need to experiment a bit with that.
