Good eye contact and color. It appears that the light is coming form the left whcih causes significant shadows on the rt side of the bird. Better to have the light behind you. Would crop a little from the bottom
Welcom to BPN. I see this is your first post. Great place to learn.

Nice first post! I will reserve my comments until others have had a chance - will be back :)
Welcome, Pauline. Lovely bird -- what is the species, for those of us who live elsewhere?? Agree with earlier comments. Hope to see more posts from South Africa.
Welcome Pauline, beautiful mood you have created here with the sidelighting and reflection. Love the eye too. Wish for a little more sharpness too. Looking forward to more birds from SA.
Big Warm Welcome Pauline !! Like the mood and overall feel, nice looking red crested pochard !!!
Agree with suggestions Main being the point of focus, do try to nail the eye sharp !!! Light was harsh and not much you could do about it except waiting for the duck to make it into a shade area !!! ... off light angles make for dramatic portraits but hard to make !! Looking forward to the next one .... if you can please send pm with your last name so I can make the change !!!
Hi, I also bid you a warm welcome to the forum. I agree the image has a nice mood but also prefer the head to be sharp. The side lighting is very bright which has caused you to lose details in the whites. With that type of strong lighting it is difficult to balance the 2 extremes...
