Hi Don - glad you liked it -- head on shots like this are much tougher on the AF system - really have to try and grab that focus and hope it holds and shooting wide open -its really gotta be on the head eye not much margin for error.

I understand the extra relative speed between bird and camera with head on shots will test the camera AF system more and for the photographer (espc with lense wide open) the difficulty is to keep the focus point on the head/eye... But would stopping down for more DOF could be an option if the background was distant? Could this help if the focus slipped to the wing for instance at the point of shutter release? I guess with head on shots there would be less requirement for smooth panning skills but similar difficulty in tracking as the bird bobs through any turbulence in a random fashion.
Its good to think about stuff like this, it might help me next time...
