    Default Elephant Plains

Captured this image over December 2009 in the Kruger Park.

It was overcast so I used some landscape processing techniques to recover detail from the washed-out sky here. I just love capturing wide-angle shots of elephants in their environment.

    Techs:
    Nikon D300s with 18-200mm VR @ 50mm
    f8.0 @ 1/400 SS @ ISO-400

    Morkel, you do it well.

That is the great thing with getting the experience of people in all the forums and it has worked well here. Love the way the shape of the elephant's head is shadowed by the tree, intentionally I'm sure! ;) You've done well with the sky, although it is overcast the feeling of the image is thoughtful rather than gloomy.

Really like the wide angle and the environment. Like that sky as well. Very dramatic clouds.

    Morkel,

Seems that you had the same clouds as we had in Hwange, but at least this is relatively normal in December. What did you do to the clouds darken or lighten.

    Great environment shot.

I like environmental images. As Hilary mentions, the branch is nicely arched. The horizon looks to be a bit tilted. Thanks for sharing.

thanks for the comments everyone...glad you like it

Ken the clouds were washed out to I created a duplicate layer, darkened it sufficiently and blended back in the dark clouds my means of an inverted highlights mask.

Sabya - I noted that too but upon rotation the elephant seemed to lean too much for me, so I gauged my level by the animal's pose.

    Nice!
love the similar textures in the big guy and the 'small' tree a bit back... and the combination of dark clouds and green trees always make me nostalgic, don't know why...
    Thanks a lot for sharing!

Hi Morkel, I like the shot and I think the work you have done to the sky adds to the pic. As noted by others, the arched tree is a nice touch. Very nice environmental shot. One question, do you have a shot of the ele with his ears flared out just a little more?
    cheers

I must agree - the wide angle takes this over the top. Fantastic image Morkel.

Nice shot Morkel. Love the habitat, especially the way the tall tree is sort of framing the elle. Sky looks good as well.
