I made this at Nickerson yesterday morning. What do you think is going on here?

Axel, as usual a fabulous image, pin sharp, fabulous FG and BG and great HA and eye contact on the mother. You even got great eye contact with the chick. When I see images like this I often just feel like giving up:confused:.

Whatever is happening here is pretty cool interaction you got! Perfect exposure, and the eye(s) looks great. Looks like an avian version of "Cops"...I think the juvenile bird is going to spend the night in jail!

Great interaction, exp is excellent. Did the kid get at least a dinner before being grounded?

I wonder what is going on. Techs are perfect as usual. Nice interaction, great eye contact and angle.

Good HA's and eye contact from both, and I think mom has found a new foot rest. Hopefully, she is not hurting the little one.

Based on my observations of shorebirds, I'd speculate that what you saw and miraculously captured lasted only a few seconds or less where the adult was attempting to disguise and protect the juvenile from an overflight of prey.

Wow that is some action captured in this image. Sure hope the baby survived  Excellent exposure, detail and low angle but the action puts it over the top for. Well done Axel !

Thanks for the comments and interpretation of the behavior. This Common Tern chick was running around at the beach and the parents constantly tried to round him up. Most chicks hide under the grass when the parents chase them back. This one did not and one of the parents just stood on his back for a while. I'm not sure if this some display of dominance, disciplining or hiding the chick from predators or something completely different.

This is sooooo interesting, we can only guess as to why, but great that you were able to capture the behavior with your usually goos quality :)

Man, Axel, talk about being at the right place at the right time.....but it's more than just serendipity for a good photographer. Fantastic catch!

Axel, what a moment, I've never seen this before. Your image of course is excellent. Did the parent let the chick up eventually? And if so, what was the chick's behavior like when released?

Thanks, Grace! The parent let the chick go after a while and it was a bit calmer but not too much.
