Default Death of a Dragon (ISO 6400, SOOC)

I was trying to stake out a Beaver and this bird perched close to me with its late night snack. I figured why not see how a straight of camera shot looks off the 7D.

No sharpening, noise reduction, or crop. Straight Raw conversion w/ +50 on the brightness slider everything else set to 0. I do wish my original exposure was a step brighter...

    Camera: Canon EOS 7D
    Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
    Aperture: f/5.6
    Focal Length: 700 mm
    ISO Speed: 6400
    Exposure Bias: 0 EV
500mm f/4 IS, AV mode, tripod, servo

I have uploaded somewhat of an optimized version on flickr, including 1 round of noise reduction on full image, and an additional round on just the bg.

    Cool title!

Looks like you have yourself an Eastern Phoebe.

Yes, the noise brought on by the high ISO and underexposure is quite evident - but you know that already and already took action. Good comp, but I think it could use a swap in the amount of room you currently have top and bottom. Nice when these ops just present themselves like that!

Tremedous action, lots of detail considering the high ISO and underexposure. You can still work a bit more on de-noising the BG.
Remember to take the sharpening away from de noise reduction software when you use it mow than once, otherwise, artifact will creep on your image big time!
    TFS.
