Okay guys, here is another one for you that I just got this morning. I think it is an albino downy woodpecker. It was far too small for a red-bellied and its bill seems a little small for a hairy. I think it is albino because its bill, legs, claws, everything is pigmentless. Its eye is reddish. Please let me know what you think of all of my assumptions. I posted another image of the same bird in Friends and Family. Thanks!!
I would say you are definitely right about the albinism here Danny- the pink eye clinches it. Very interesting as this is very rare in nature. I'm not sure about the ID but the face has the look of a Red-bellied Woodpecker. I think the bill is a bit long for a Downy.
I agree that the bill seems a bit stout for a downy but a bit short for a hairy. When a red-bellied woodpecker lands on the same feeder, it dwarfs this little guy so I ruled that one out pretty quickly. This bird is a tiny little woodpecker as you can see from its size next to the dog clip. I sent the image to our state ornithologist, Andrew Forbes, but I probably won't hear from him until Monday. I hope one way or another, we can come up with a final answer. Thanks!
