The guides had found a spotted hyena den the week before I arrived at Lagoon Camp on the Upper Kwando. As the heat of an October afternoon passed, the mother and pups emerged from their den to start suckling. This youngster was slightly more interested in playing.
A young hyena will retain its dark coat until it starts to develop its spots through its adolescence.
Taken at Kwando Lagoon Camp
Note for Steve: Was with Vundi when I took this image, who is once again working at Kwando.
Cuteness personified Russell! Is the lower one suckling?
These guys, especially at this young age, are not easy to capture out in the open, so well done!
