    Default Loon with chick cruising

Just back from northern Michigan, where I got to spend some time with my favorite birds.
    Shot from my fishing boat.

Chicks are about 4 weeks old now and growing fast.

    D300 500mm f/4 with TC14 @ f/8 Manual exposure ISO 500 Pedestal mounted Wimberley V2
Post; curves, selective sharpening, linear burn on breast full frame

    Advice always appreciated.

    Cheers

I like the angle, sharpness and inclusion of the chick. Could you have backed up to get the entire chick in the frame? What shutter speed did you use?

    Axel:
Sorry I missed the shutter speed. 1/1000. When they turn and swim towards the boat, I can't move quick enough to reframe them, and as mentioned, this is full frame. I normally have the boat perpendicular to the birds so I can shoot off the side, but it does limit my ability to back up quickly.

I have other frames just a bit further away, with the entire chick, but preferred the overall image here.

    Thanks

    Randy

One sweet image and a wonderful story told. Well done. Low angle is killer.

Good result, Randy. My only question was the same as Axel's. Lovely low angle and BG.

I like the feel of this one. The OOF chick in the back gives a nice 3D appearance. Well done.

    Randy...

I kinda like it with the chick more OOF but still in the frame as it lends itself well to the attention of the adult.

Great head turn, exposure and sharpness.
