January 2008, Bandhavgarh. "Bokkha," the dominant male of the region three days after fighting off one of his sons to remain the rajah of his territory (and likely sustaining some injury to his left ear). I believe Bokkha means "little boy" in the local dialect of the villagers -- equivalent to the Hindi word bachcha (pronounced like the "ch" in change).

I took this from the back of an elephant and, because he was on a small hill, I was at about the same level as him. When he looked into my lens, I became concerned for my life as the previous dominant male in the area, Charger, was known to have killed a mahout (elephant handler) and maimed multiple tourists on elephants.

Yes, he was huge and magnificient. Though when he walked, one could barely hear a noise. Leaves under his feet were silent. Only breaking twigs and branches would give him away.
I envy the folks who are able to see these creatures regularly.
