Default Point and Shoot around $200

I know this has been discussed before but I thought I'd see what's out there now. A good friend's son is going to Iceland with his girlfriend and would like a digital camera. $200 or a little more is pretty much all he wants to spend. He would like one that has a pretty decent zoom. Any suggestions would be helpful. Most of the P & S that I might recommend are well above the $200 price range. I'd take any suggestions up to $300 as I'm not sure that there is much available for $200. Thanks for any help.

If you’re willing to push it to $350, this is a nice one. Of course, it’s the only one I’ve ever owned and can attest too. I’m sure most in the $200 range would be adequate for any snap shooting travelers. Good luck.

If $200 is a hard limit, I feel OK recommending one of the successors to my still functioning A510, such as the Canon A1100 available for $100 refurbished at Adorama. If you want a bigger zoom, the Canon SX200 is available refurbished for $210 at Adorama.

Despite their tiny sensor arrays, these are very competent cameras, the images look OK if taken at base ISO and reduced at least 4:1, and really all you have to do to take photos is exposure compensate and avoid camera shake.

    Hi Lana
Just wonder if you and he can check out cameras in a duty free shop either @ the airport or in the city.
If you found a good one then maybe he could hire one for a weekend to familiarise himself with it.
I like the 12 times or more Canon Powershots.

My grand daughter loves her Nikon Coolpix L110:

It was under $250 at Sam's.

Thanks, guys. I'm going to send the suggestions to my friend's son. I had come across several of those suggested so I'll just let him do the comparison. Unbelievable how many models are out there.

I have a ZS3 and it's very nice. Great zoom range and being able to take HD video is awesome w/ a tiny camera. A ZS3 or ZS7 would be a good choice. You can find a used or refurb ZS3 for about $200.
