    Default ISO more or flash

referring to an answer last year by Julie Kenwardand particularly as my thread 'Lady Madonna' in Macro, to have more DOf. well last weekend I photographed flowers in macro in similar distance, with f 10-13 and 320ISO but I had to use the flash to have a proper DOF. In ISO, till now, I suppose well not to excced 400 Iso.
I've looked what other does : they vary a lot 200 ISO-1000 ISO
    What do you think?

If flash lights are available to you and you know how to use them well as in the result doesn't look like flash has been used, flash.

You should also consider using a tripod.

There is no quick answer here, consideration has to be given to the subject and the ambient light and equipment. If you are using flash simply to freeze motion that is one thing to use it to fill in darker areas and provide a more even illumination is another, and the degree or amount of fill in will be dictated by the subject and how light or dark it is. If you can use a tripod and the subject is still I would try to use ambient light and possibly consider reflectors, if fill in flash is required then I would take shots using the flash at different settings eg as 1:1 then reduce the flash in incremental stops to say -2, try this with different coloured subjects and you will soon develop an appreciation for the flash requirement. I would always recommend using a sturdy tripod for macro or any other form of photography unless there is a very good reason not to.

Thank to all. Jonatan more precise. YES OK..The natural light. I mean I use tripod. To Lance: I use mostly Nikon D70 but recently I bought a Nikon D300 which has the possibility of 100 ISO (less DOF) and more suitable for night photos. I use Nikon D70 when I have to make a trip in the mountains becuse is not heavy.
