Default Downy woodpecker on a telephone pole

D70s, 80-400VR, hand-held, 1/2500, f/8.0, ISO400, large crop - tried to get enough of the pole in without overwhelming the image. Minor color and noise adjustments. Rather harsh mid-morning light.

Nice, but slightly ruffled subject. I'd cut some of the empty space off the bottom and leave the top space as is. I'd like the HA to be more toward the camera, which also light the beak a little better. Still, nice image.

Hi Richard - nice bird - but the large crop has hurt the IQ, Dark area's and the eye look quite pixelated.
Was the original under exposed or did you use S/H in PP.
Harsh light wont help either - casts deep dark shadows.

    Keep em coming :)

Maybe it';s the large crop, something is going on here?? Keep them coming though. Great species, and pose!

Agree with comments and wished for lower angle !!! .. btw with your lens do make the image at the 400 range to lessen the angle as much as possible !!!

Hi Richard, good comments above. The first thing I noticed was the noise. The large crop certainly affected the IQ. As mentioned the lighting is harsh which creates other issues...
