    Default One fine Kalahari morning...

Taken early one morning outside the Nossob rest camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words...so I'll shut up and let this one talk...

    Techs:
    Canon 7D with 100-400mm L IS USM @ 190mm
    f5.0 @ 1/2500 SS @ ISO-1250
    Exposure bias -1

I know I should have probably gone to f8.0 and ISO-400 for more DOF but at the moment I was shooting two other springbok males sparring closer by (using auto-ISO for the early light and going for fast SS), and saw the shafts of light illuminating the rest of the herd and took a few snaps without looking at my settings :o

    Morkel,
Nice stuff you are trying. I agree that a narrow aperture would have been great here. My first impression is to move the camera to the left as I feel the right side being dark may be reduced without taking away much from the image. Going vertical to capture that nicely lit area would have been great as well. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to more.

    Cheers,
    Sabyasachi

Would agree with Sabyasachi about re positioning, more to the left, you could also look at slightly lightening it to bring out some more detail perhaps?

thanks for the feedback Sabya & Steve...

I pushed the blacks a bit during processing to get this look - trying to emphasise the light and rim-lighting.

Here is a quick rework (done on a less-than desirable screen) so let me know if something is amiss now...went for a lighter look and cropped a bit more from the RHS. Didn't want to crop too much on this one as I have shots of only the LHS isolated which I will post once processed.

I didn't go for verticals here as right above my crop-line at the top it gets very bright and blown out as the sun was above the dunes in that area.

Love the repost Morkel, now really emphasising the light direction and rim lighting.
If mine, would crop out from your © symbol.

Hi Morkel - love the repost. Fallen tree adds to the feeling.

I really like the shot. I can almost feel the cool morning air. I like the second edit better than the first with the more ethereal feel.

One sweet image Morkel !! Dramatic light brings dramatic images !!! Agree on moving the camera left but don't know what is there? Re-post wise would like and in-between, like some of the darker tones of the first one ... either way I'm just sitting here enjoying the image !!!

One very fine image of one fine Kalahari morning, Mork. Beautifully done, as usual.

I think your repost brightens it a bit too much in the midsection and at bottom (but is fine at the top left). There's no "right"
answer here, but I would play with toning it down in place, something roughly like this ...

Lovely shot Morkel, really has a good feel to it. Makes me want to be there when I look at it. I preferred the lighter reposts to the original. I look forward to more from your trip.
    cheers

thanks for the comments David and Grant, and for the repost David...appreciate it.

looking at it on my proper screen it is a bit too bright so I think your repost nails it Mr Thomasson :D

    Hi Morkel
    Great light, typical Kalahari....

Agree the original needs a little lighting up.. but not as much as repost... compositionally doesnt really work for me, bok to close to tree...tree tends to dominate scene and then your eye tends to wander all over image for something to hold its interest.... sorry if sound too negative,... just saying as I see it...
