    Default Juvenile Tricolored Heron

    Attached Images Attached Images

This juvenal tricolored heron was photograph on June 5th, 2010 at Gatorland during a workshop with Robert Amoruso. One concern here was trying to isolate the subject from the busy background and clutter. On retrospect a small amount of fill-flash might have been in order.

Beautifully done. Love them at this stage. Perfect head position and angle and perfectly sharp on the eye. BKGR is pretty good for the most part. Love the feet and legs and that grip on the perch.

Phil, The BG color is lovely. Beautiful sharp details. Gatorland has so many opportunities and I was fortunate enough to shoot there this year. You did a great job isolating the bird and the pose is fantastic!

Very nice as presented, Phil, I can't see how full flash could have made this better since there's no apparent shadows to fill. Good job in isolating your subject, who happens to be quite funky :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My comment about a small amount of fill flash was as much of a question as statement. Still on a steep learning curve with the flash. I could have worded it better:o. Thanks again for you comments Artie, Denise, and Fabs.

Very successful image, Phil. Not sure fill flash would have added much other than a catchlight - even the inside of the bill has detail. I like how the BG echoes the colour of the iris.

I think fill flash might have brightened up the colors some and made him pop more. Don't see it needed otherwise as far as shadows etc. Nice as is though, especially with the head turn. Got to get to gatorland meeself some day. I hear you can get in EARLY and STAY LATE. Or is that only if your with a workshop that has that all set up already??

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate it.

You asked: I hear you can get in EARLY and STAY LATE. Or is that only if your with a workshop that has that all set up already??

It is my understanding that Gatorland’s Photo Pass is not dependent on you being part of a workshop. This gives you asscess to staring at 7:30 to dusk.
    Annual pass cost about $100.00
    Day Pass runs about $30.00
Here is the description from their web-site
    (www.gatorland.com/)
    Gatorland Photo Pass

    Description

Specifically designed for Photographers and Bird Watchers, the Gatorland Annual Photo Pass allows for unlimited entry to Gatorland during normal business hours (not valid for special events) for the period of one year from date of issue. In addition, the Photo Pass allows for "Dawn to Dusk" access to the Rookery section only with early entry at 7:30 am and the ability to stay past closing time until dusk. This new program will run every Wednesday through Sunday February 3 - July 31, 2010.

Extremely pleasing Image.... BG as mentioned is great; the heron position and isolation is excellent. I might think about adding a little yellow to its eye....and tad bit of density to the overall image....:)
    Congrats,
    Mike

Great pose and exposure, I would sharpen it just a little more and then I think it would pop.
