    Default Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

From the cottage last week. This guy was pretty active, frequenting many drill holes it had bored...but unfortunately in very deep shade and higher up than I prefer. I used audio to lure this guy out onto an open and lit perch. The kids were pretty happy to have a good peek what this guy actually looked like (they were beside me when I took this image). I would have hoped this guy would have swung right to clear his head from the trunk, but at least the bill is outlined nicely agaisnt pale colours.

Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, apereture priority, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/6.3, ISO 400, +0.3 EC, natural light, handheld. Full-frame. Perch toned down in PS.

Hey Dan, the light on the sapsucker looks good to me, together with colours and sharpness. If only we could tell them where to pose.

Actually I like him where he is, awesome trunk and soft light. I can imagine how excited the kids were :)

Very nice Dan. I especially like the raised head feathers and alert look on this male. The boys must have enjoyed seeing it.

Thanks for this fine image of a North American favorite. Right, the bill just does stand out against the pale lichens.
