    Default Canon G11

I am considering purchasing the G11 and looking for any opinions, positive or negative or recommendation of another point and shoot camera. Also,as always am sure Canon will come out with a G12 if I purchase this. Anyone hear of any rumors of a G12 coming out soon? Thanks.

    Steven:

I also considered the G11 but finally decided on the Canon PowerShot S90, because I wanted a camera that was so compact that I could always have it with me anywhere I went. I have not been disappointed and in fact once posed a macro image of a praying mantis on BPN captured with the S90 that IMO was essentially as good as could be obtained with a Nikon or Canon digital SLR.

The 10 MP S90 lacks an optical viewfinder but has a faster lens (f/2.0) than the G11. Its effective focal length range is 28-105 mm (I wish it reached further). But it shoots RAW files as well as high quality JPEGs and in addition to an auto mode, provides evaluative metering, IS and complete control over WB, effective ISO, exposure comp, macro and flash, in any of the standard priority modes such as shutter and aperture priority. Basically, if you can set it on an SLR, you can also do it with this camera.

You might want to look at the very compact and light weight S90 before making your decision.

I picked up a G11 last week and like the Swivel Screen, etc...but I got it mainly for shooing RAW images and quickly found out that my editing platform Lightroom 1.4 / Photoshop CS3 does not support the RAW files from the G11. I had to download Canon's DPP software and I also tried Adobe's DNG converter. With all the extra hassle it takes to convert images, I think I'll be getting rid of it soon.

I am also spoiled by the fantastic IQ of my 1D III, so in that regard the images from the G11 didn't cut it for me.

The RAW .CR2 files from the Canon PowerShot S90 also cannot be handled by Bridge from Photoshop CS3 or by the software Canon supplied with the camera. So I had to use Adobe's DNG converter to view the .CR2 files in CS3.

But today I used the S90 and downloaded the files, including .CR2 files, with Bridge from Photoshop CS5. No problem. The RAW files were easy to read using CS5. I never owned CS4, so I don't know whether it could handle the .CR2 files from the S90.

I use a G10 and very happy with the camera. Performs well and you only need to be concern with keeping the ISO to 80 or 100 .. higher will get lots of noise. For its intended use its great !!

check out my tampa bay nighttime skyline shots taken with the G10. Its a great camera. I like to carry it for macro and for getting the landscape shots when I'm otherwise bogged down with large lenses.
