Needs to be higher in the frame! There are several areas which are too dark underneath the bird, no doubt due to the harsh lighting. You did well handling the highlights though. I like the HA, wing position, and bent primaries!
Why f/9?

Yes, placing the bird on the upper left in the frame is the more conventional composition.
The sky looks oversaturated to me and agree with Colin;s other points.
I would have traded for f/8, 1/1250
Hi Michael, I think this one could go higher in the frame and the blue sky looks way over done. Of course I am viewing from my laptop so take that for what it is worth. Nice and sharp though, could maybe go a tad brighter on the mid tones.
I agree with position. It would be easy enough to add canvas to the bottom to achieve that.
Sky. I guess I could have desaturated the sky but I typically don't do that. WB was Auto. Time of day was 6:30 PM ish. Direction was almost due south. I have some shots taken later toward the SE and the sky was slightly less blue. I didn't PS the sky to be blue. It came that way.
f9 is 1/3 of a stop off of f8 which is typically where I try to shoot the 800. I don't remember making a conscious choice to roll the back dial a click but I'm sure it was because as I looked in the metering window and, by the meter, I needed about a 1/3 stop less for good exposure. I actually didn't need that click btw. I ended up taking it out in ACR. I had 2 or 3 seconds to compose and take the shot.
