Default Red Fox on Barrier Island

This is a red fox I came across a few mornings ago while exploring Carrot Island in search of feral horses. I've seen foxes on the island before... usually slinking off try to stay out of my eye-sight. This one seemed unaware of me for several minutes allowing me to make some images.

    Canon 40D, Bigma @ 500mm, iso 1000, f/6.3, 1/250. Post via CS3.

Love the fox and the big bright eyes!

To me, it looks too bright over all - the foreground could be darkened. It might have turned out a bit sharper w/ a higher ISO and higher shutter speed.

Hi Bob - on my screen looks a little bright and contrasty!!
Like the setting and pose - might crop a little from the bottom.
    Would revisit the PP.
    :)

Nice capture Bob....love this little guy...what a great pose and eye contact...he was watching you for sure. Looked too bright on my screen also and agree with Lance on a little more cropping. Being new at this, hope you don't mind my playing with the image. I ran NR, adjusted exposure in PS with Gamma correction, slight color boost and contrast to make him even cuter and did a 10% darkening (6% may have worked) with the burn tool on the foreground. As I said, I am just learning and was practicing

    Excellent re post Ken !!!

Hi Bob Light you can't do much maybe use a polarizer form the boat? Will loose over two stops but might be worth trying when the light gets harsh Here I would have used a much higher ISO, the slow shutter speed got you, image does not appear sharp !!! .. keep finding neat stuff from the boat !!!

Alfred, did you see any mention of a boat? :) I always note hand-held and kayak shots. Didn't think about it for a land based shot. Probably should have. This was shot from a tripod using a gimbla style mount and proper technique and it is as sharp as that lens is capable of at that aperature. (I always cringe at the frequent "open up the lens" comments that I get that do not take into consideration the capabilities of this lens... sharp at 8.0 and above, somewhat soft below). Also, I made a typo on the iso... it's at iso 1000... i.e. really pushing the capablitlies of the 40D where noise is concerned (I'll fix the typo after this reply). I was wondering where the "use higher iso" comments were coming from. ;)

I'd be very interested in post processing tips. The BG is reallly dark, and a tad noisey if you look at the blacks. The dried out grasses on the dune over exposed, the fox borders on hot IMO. Didn't like what I got when I tried Shadows/Highlights.

Hi Bob, Ken's repost is an improvement adding contrast and darkening the image a bit. I might crop a bit off the left...
