Default Standard sizes or what's best for the image?

I have been lurking for a year or so and recently posted a couple of images for learning purposes. The feedback has been truly kind and helpful, which is the best and not all that common in the digital world.

So thanks to all the real experts who take their time to help others.

My question is, how do you decide when to stick with the standard photo sizes, for example: how do you decide between 11x14 or 16x20? Or do you always go with what is best for the image? I have noticed many times the leading suggestion is to crop a little here or there, or in my case to go PANO which really did make a great difference. I have a photo which looks best in 6x12 but who ever heard of a 6x12? Will it look silly in a show?

Do you have different standards for publishing vs print displays?

The artist in me wants to go with what is best for the image, but I could see the display on the wall ending up a jumble of funny sizes and having a poor overall impact.

Hi John Will go with best crop and not restraint yourself to a ratio. Only downside is framing, will need custom frames....

If you are doing shows then making your matts would be the best option, will save a ton of money but just for displaying around home/office have them flush mounted on 1/2 inch foam board. Looks great and its inexpensive .. images are not protected but if damaged can print again !!!

    John,
I agree with Alfred. If it works, I'll crop to 8x10 proportions, but if the crop is better off a standard size, I'll go the custom route.
