Red lechwe at pace

Canon 40D, Canon 300mmf2.8is lens, s/speed 1/10sec, f4.0, iso 400, handheld from a vehicle. Cropped to 8.5mpixels. Image processed in ACR, sharpened in PS. 15 August 2009, 18h27. Taken just after sunset. Location Tubu Tree, Okavango Delta, Botswana. Panned with the movement of the lechwe, as it was running through water. Red lechwe use shallow water for refuge and are adapted to moving quickly in wet places, with widely-splayed hooves and powerful hindquarters.

What kind of craziness is this? OMG -- I love it!! I'm very hesitant to make a suggestion here but I'm wondering how it would look if the critter were not dead center in the frame. Anyways, congrats on a wonderful image.

Hi Grant, well the grass certainly doesn't grow under your feel as you post quite different images, so no guessing what you may post. Brilliant!!!

Comp works, as well does the technique, just wonder if the colours look just a tad flat? Just boosted the curves on this, not sure if it helps or not. just felt it needed something? WDYT.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I lost my internet last night so couldn't respond till now. Well, I was quite lucky with the result here, and my panning skills are a bit hit and miss..I throw away lots of mistakes:). Steve, thanks for your repost, it does look a bit punchier. Doug, I would have also liked to have it further left in the frame, but wasnt confident on using any but the cenre focus point. Next time.

Grant - awesome panning shot, a Lechwe shot is something I still need in my gallery.

I like what Steve has done on the repost, and I just thought I'd do a quick canvas add to give you another option. I merely used the crop tool to widen the crop which left a white patch to the RHS, then used the rectangular selection tool to select a big enough piece of BG, and then just stretched it out on the blank canvas. Your signature is obviously difficult to avoid stretching in this file :)
