    Default Hermit Thrush.

Just spent a nice day with my two boys at the family cottage. Not lots of photography time, but lots of birds so it was productive for the small amount of time I did do so. This Hermit Thrush was very cooperative with the use of audio. This was not a setup perch, but rather a chance landing as I was expecting it to land in an evergreen in front of me (it did so afterwards). An unsightly OOF patch at right was removed via the clone and patch tools, and some of the lightest lichens have been toned down.

Canon 40D + 100-400L @ 400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/60s., f/6.3, ISO 800, no EC, handheld (sitting atop a pic-nic table with elbows braced on knees), just about FF with a small amount cropped left and bottom. The second twig from the right has been shortened by half.

    Daniel:

Not too bad for a non setup perch, eh:D
The selective pruning has created a very nice frame for the bird.
Well exposed, good call on toning down the lichens, as they are still fairly bright, and would have been distracting in the original.

    Cheers

Very nice perch, Daniel and great framing framing provided by the upper branches. The pose fits in the image perfectly.

Hey Dan, good pose, and well placed under the hanging foliage. I do like the lichen on the perch, and the thrush stands out well against the darker BG. An opportunity well used.

Could not have been any better had you planned it! A sweet bird on a sweet perch and the pines frame him so nicely. Only small suggestion, any way to make the beak stand out a bit from the background?

Stunning composition against the black BG. Love how the evergreen frames the subject. Excellent pose and detail make this a very fine image.

Many things to like about this image. For me , the comp. puts it in a class by itself.

Dan I love this one. Perch and framed bird with the dark BG all work well together.

The thrush emerges like a hermit from the darkness. I like how your picture tells that story. Nice work.

Not often you get a Hermit Thrush out in the open, good capture, nice color and sharpness..

    Hi Daniel,

I like the attentive pose and head angle. I also like that I get a good view of the feet. I find the perch to be very interesting with it's different textures and colors. The dark background displays the bird nicely while the twigs help frame the bird. Well done!

Very nice framing Daniel, excellent exposure and light. Composition with the head turn to the right works very well. Very well done :)
