    Default Saw-whet owl feeding young

From last night at the saw-whet owl nest. No grizzly to worry about now. Looks like the young get fed 3 mice a night. There are 3 owlets so 1 per.... You have very few chances and you only get one image per visit. Phototrap with 2 cameras firing and 2 sets of 2 flashes, one set per camera.

Very cool! You even got a catchlight for the mouse. Can you see in the large TIFF file what the bright spot in the nesting hole is? My best guess is that it is an owlet waiting for the food delivery. Thanks for sharing!

Great capture Robert, with excellent flash work. The subjects stand out so well from the night sky.

This one you nailed!! Mouse is alive???
I think the bright spot is a catch light in the Owlet's eye.
Way to go, wish I was there!

Thanks Fabs, no the mouse is quite dead... Every time I've seen a saw-whet with a mouse it always carried it the same way, by the scruff of the neck.. Wonder if the hotshot biologists know about that. This is also the first confirmed nesting in this latilong according to the Wyoming Bird and Mammal Atlas.. I'm not sure I have the latest version so I may be wrong on that.

I don't know where to begin critiquing so extraordinary a photo. I'm unfamiliar with the sophisticated flash photography that you're practicing. I do know that I enjoy this image very much. Photos like these are the kind that broaden our understanding of species and their behavior. Just two questions: If the owl is always flying in at the angle pictured above, why not shift your equipment a bit so as to get a more front-on shot? And I'm just curious, but why did you say "No grizzly to worry about now"? Where'd he go?

Dale, Not much else to add here, great stuff! I see why this bird has such broad wings, for lifting prey that is fairly large compared to the small size of the bird.

    Good Shooting!

Tried the angle from more straight ahead and had a very busy BG to deal with along with trees in the way. We decided to builld a platform to hold the camera right under the nest cavity to get a wide angle image but it seems as though the birds fledged. We saw nothing of them last night :(

See this thread http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=66361 we we're photographing these owls about a mile from where this happened the evening it happened. The bear was killed by the authorities.

Wow, simply amaxing behaviour captured!! I hate to point thess out on such a wonderful image, but there are some blotches that need to be cleaned-up below thwe mouse's tail, and there are two clone marks (?) at lower end of tree, as well as PP artefacts all along the left edge (extended canvas and cloning near the wing?). All minor clean-ups that will nicely polish off the image.
