This is a typical situation in which I've found many white pelicans along the Mississippi River. It has just swallowed a five-pound carp and the tail of the fish is left protruding against the bill pouch, thus validating a well-known limerick....its bill can hold more than its belican! You can see ice on the bird's back. I'm invigorated as I remember how brutal the conditions were on the riverbank that day. By the way, it was 98 degrees F in St. Louis today.

    Canon 40D; Canon 500/4 + 1.4 TC; 1/2000; f/6.3; ISO 200; Gitzo GT3530LS w/Wimberley II draped with cut-leaf camo.

P.S. The pelican will be back to normal after a few hours of digestion.

Never seen this before! The whites look good to me. Eye contact and sharpness are there too. It's worth it all the more to fight some harsh conditions to get the shot, right? TFS!

You're telling me! Went to Bull Island recently- packed 2.5 gallons of water for a 1.5 day trip. It wasn't NEARLY enough! We were sweating it out faster than we could drink it!

Very nice shot for sure. This is the one bird that I missed out this season. :)
Still see them in Florida but usually high in the sky.

Phewwwww, good to read the deformation was temporary :)
Great as presented, excellent whites and catch light, very sharp and the ice the "icing' (pun intended) on the cake.

Fabs - Sometimes it is very temporary because if they are disturbed and take flight at this stage they sometimes have to discharge their partially digested cargo which sometimes lands on the person, persons or boat which disturbed them. Yuk!

Hi Danny, thanks for sharing something I have never seen. Good to hear its only temporary. The ice does add an extra touch, and I remember how cold your winter was.

Nice detail Danny. Especially like the ice on the back. And I'm glad you explained what was happening. I was thinking "poor pelican", now its "poor carp"!"
