Taken the same time as the previous post - was under exposing for a reason.....
Sun was periodically peaking through the trees behind me - providing a sort of spotlight effect that I found interesting.

    Nikon 300mm F2.8 With 1.7x converter
    F4.8
    1/640th
    1600 ISO
    Matrix metering
    Manual Exposure
    Handheld

Not crazy about the BG but is what it is - the spotlight effect might not be everyones cup of tea.

Hi Lance, I hope this one provides as good a learning opportunity as your previous post; thanks for that lesson. IMO this BG is better than yesterday's. I also like the pose, and the spotlight effect is fine with me. The ripples in the foreground are also nice. I do see two issues with this image: 1) the front of the beak gets confused with the dark water BG; 2) the HA police will give you a ticket. Eager to see what others think.

Hi Ricardo - Ill plead my case with the HAP - seeing as mr bird is engaged in a activity - I might get a Pass ;)

Lance - I like the spotlight effect. Great detail. I don't mind the HA, looks like he's concentrating on the task at hand - fishing.

    Hi Lance

I like this a lot more than the previous post of the same bird. The extra light makes the detail on the bird stand out more from the background IMHO, looks great. I think the HA police would have to be very picky to have a go at you over this, I like the intense stare of the bird looking for dinner...

I agree, Lance, the HAP should be lenient this time.

Hi Ricardo ... Lance gets a pass :D Head angle wise I will judge with each image but don't apply to all, a little common sense is needed.

As Lance pointed out this bird is going after a meal and is concentrating. Now if the bird turns away from us more things can get a little tricky and might mean moving our position to coincide with the desirable head angle. When shooting I will move to the best position but will not worry about such a small angle when a behavior is captured !!

With stationary birds doing nothing it does seem to help on two counts, image being more intimate and the dof part !!!

BTW we might get a motif/assignment .. wrong head angle that works or something like that. Will have to get together with Lance and Dave along with our staff :D and come up something interesting :)

Hi Lance, IMO the HA in this situation is perfectly acceptable. The subject is not noticably looking away and engaged in an activity. The lighting is soft and pleasing along with strong diagonal pose(that also tells a story)
The backround is nicely muted and overall a well handled image!!

Excellent behavioral shot, great light very well taken. I would prefer more space left, bottom and right.

I like this type of shot. To me, this shows the bird's behavior, hunting for food and HA does not apply here. The eye actually shows Concentration in this case.
