    Default Daurian Redstart

Canon EOS 7D, EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM, handheld
1/400 sec at f/2.8, ISO 320 (Aperture Priority; Auto ISO)

Hi all! This is my first image post to the forum. This is a male Daurian Redstart (Phoenicurus auroreus), quite a common winter visitor to where I live, and a very colourful one at that! I cropped this shot to about 2/3 of its original size. Any comments and suggestions welcome!

    Cheers,

    John

Welcome to BPN, John. Very nice first post. I like the pose and the sharpness is good. The image looks a little overexposed with the whites on the wing blown. You may be able to reprocess the raw file with more recovery. Look forward to seeing more of your images.

Thanks for the comment, Tony - I didn't notice the blown highlights! I went back into LR2 and fixed it up. The updated image should be showing now.

Great to see birds from that area, John! I like the angle and soft light. Adding to Tony's comment, I see a slight magenta cast on my monitor and wish the branch in the foreground were not there. Keep them coming!

Thanks for the comment, Axel - I have real problems detecting slight colour casts.......I can never tell unless it is very obvious.....I usually just leave the WB at 'as shot' and trust that the camera has done its job! :) I have a Dell 27' monitor with a Spyder3 hooked up, so I think my monitor is calibrated correctly.

Maybe you can try to reduce the magenta saturation 10-15 points and see if you notice the difference.

Hi Axel: I have gone back into Lightroom 2 and under the HSL controls taken 15 points off the magenta of each of hue, saturation and luminence.....I couldn't really see much difference to tell the truth......the updated file should be showing at the top of the post now.

It's better to leave the original post and reply to your thread with a repost so that other people see what we were talking about. There is still a magenta cast. Why don't you try to change the color balance in PS instead by taking the magenta/green slider more to the green.

Sorry Axel, I don't have PS...let me try with Aperture and see if I can do something with it...here we are - totally reprocessed in Aperture 3 (which I am a complete novice at using). I tried decreasing the magenta by about 10 points.....not sure if this is better or not though with regard to hue..........sorry, I am a bit clueless about all this.
