Hi all! I'm John and I'm an Australian currently living in Japan. I live on the southern island of Kyushu, which is the second-best Japanese birding location (first being Hokkaido), probably most famous for wintering Hooded and White-naped Cranes. I am self-employed (teaching, interpretation, guiding, website development), so I am lucky in that I can often take time off when I want, so I have lots of chances to seek out rare species. My wife is Thai, so I also spend several weeks a year in Thailand visiting exotic birding locations like Doi Inthanon and Liam Pak Bia. While I usually photograph birds, I basically photograph anything that moves, and have a particular fondness for herps. I hope forum members will find my images interesting and give me lots of constructive criticism so that I can improve my photography. I also hope to be able to offer suggestions to other members.

Lastly, my current equipment is a Canon EOS 7D which I use almost exclusively with an EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM. I also often use a 1.4x teleconverter and more rarely a 2x TC. I usually shoot handheld. Sometimes I use a 580EX Speedlite either on-camera with a Better Beamer or off-camera using the 7D's wireless flash capability. I don't use a blind or hide as yet - any suggestions on a good one would be welcomed!

    Thanks for reading! :)

Thanks Steve - actually I was wondering what the benefits of membership subscription are......can't seem to find any info on it other than the costs...

John, I know they are working on that list - we're almost done with the new "look" of BPN so it should be out soon. Two of the main advantages to membership are being able to post more often and being eligible for Image of the Week and Image of the Year.

Sounds like you're in a great place for bird photography!

Thanks Jules! Sounds like membership would be worth it then, but I think I'll wait until getting back from my Thailand trip in mid-August - should have plenty of images to post then! :)
