    Default Osprey in Flight

    Attached Images Attached Images

Taken on the North Fork of Long Island on my first outing with the 7D.

    Canon 7D
    100-400 @ 400mm
    1/1000
    f11
    ISO 400
Handheld, Cropped to about 80% of original. Unfortunately the light angle wasn't the best and had to apply shadows and highlights to under the wings.

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

congrats on the new camera!! a wings up or down position would have put the near wing in the light and eliminating most of the shadows and giving a more pleasing image. be interested to hear what the others have to say.

Ditto Harold on the wing position. Tough light to work with.... A crop from the bottom would tighten this up.

Thanks Harold and Arthur for the comments. Here's a repost with a crop from the bottom. Let me know if you think it is too much. Thanks again,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel Good comments Just keep the camera on the highest shutter rate for getting the ideal wing position. Tough making this one work, re post is an improvement !!!

Better with the crop. It is rare to want more room below the bird than above. It does work at times the trick is to know when :)

Excellent first capture with the new camera.
Good points on wing position and shadows. Personally, I prefer the composition of the original post. Gives me more of a sense of the height.

Thanks Arthur, Al, Joe and Lance for the comments and tips.

Lance - I'm looking forward to playing with my new toy more too. Less than 2 weeks until Alaska.

    Thanks again,

YAW. Where are you going in AK? (I just got back from Barrow.)

You and others new to the 7D might want to check out our 7D Users Guide; we have sold more than 700 to rave reviews :) Folks can learn about all three of our camera User's Guides by clicking here: https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/ca....aspx?catid=32 and scrolling down.

Thanks Arthur, I'll check out the guide. I'm going on a Von Os Photo Safari to Brooks in Katmai. I combined that with a 4 night small boat cruise on Prince William Sound and then a few extra days to cover Kenai Fjords, the Turnagain Arm and Anchorage.

I saw some of your postings from Barrow. Of course they were beautiful and it looked like a fruitful trip. Haven't gone to that part of the state yet. I went to Denali and did a small boat cruise of the Inside Passage in 2006.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Thanks. Just ordered the 7D guide. I thought about a boat trip to Hallo Bay or someplace similar but I really want to try for the iconic photo of the bear at the falls with the salmon.:) Maybe next time I'll do the boat trip.

Thank you. I am pretty sure that those images can be made only at Brooks Falls and possibly one other location.... Never in Katmai though :)

Thanks Rache. I had no clue. I checked out the prices (Yikes!) and lodging stuff. (Parties of 3 or 4 are required to share 1 cabin! ) Double Yikes!

Believe me, I know! The most expensive part is the flights in and out (only reachable by floatplane) which is included in the rates. Only 16 cabins but there is also inexpensive camping. Unfortunately, I'm just not the camping type of girl. I'll let you know if it was worth it in a few weeks.
