    Default King Eider in flight

    Barrow, AK | June | Canon 1D4 | Canon 600mm f4 IS | 1.4xTC, 1/4000 f5.6 ISO 400 approx 75% of capture

From the Barrow, Alaska trip I co-lead with Brian last week. King Eiders where the real star of the show. They were difficult to find and approach (lots of searching, long tundra hikes) but the rewards were sweet.

    Sweet!
Fine detail, great wing position, exceptional colors, nice BG and bright eye.
The only tiny (tiny) nit for me is that one strand of grass the the tip of the lower wing. My eye keeps coming back to it.
I also might experiement with cloning out that brown stip of land at the top - it detracts a little for me, but I'm sure others will find it appealing and a nice balance to the grasses below.
    Sounds like a gret trip!

Of course your techs are perfect, but what I love most about this is the sense of place. Not an image that I will soon forget!

As great an image as this is, I wish that folks could get an understanding of how hard we all (especially you and Brian Zweibel) worked to get in position crawling on our knees through ice water and stumbling for miles over the tundra. I am with Sandy on losing that one blade of grass at the 1st and 2nd primaries of the near wing but would be totally against removing the tan strip of tundra at the top as that makes the image for me!

This one is truly outstanding. I never noticed the white on the upper wings.

The photography was so good and challenging that I do not think that I took a single image of anyone photographing on the tundra or a single B-roll image... I was fixated on the three eider species!

Here's a very short behind the scenes video of us shooting a Steller's Eider last week in a similar situation as the Kind Eider photo was taken. http://www.flickr.com/photos/studeba...ds/4727087207/

Temps were in the high 20s and low 30s F. Matthew, that one sharp grass was a distraction. I like it even better now.

I am enjoying all the different Eider images, this being one of my favorites (but so many are sooo great). I like the low flight and the inclusion of the habitat. It is neat to see the different viewpoints and creative elements chosen by each photographer on this single trip.
