    Default Landing Osprey

Took my new 7D out for a trial run on wildlife and BIF this weekend after shooting with it the previous weekend in the Central Park Zoo just to try it. Taken on the North Fork of Long Island in the late afternoon. A bunch of years ago New York state started erecting poles for osprey to build nests on in an effort to get the osprey to return to Long Island. It has been a successful program.

    Canon 7D
    100-400 @400mm
    1/800
    f10
    ISO 400
    Handheld, slight crop

    C&C welcome and appreciated. Thanks,

    Rachel

Hi Rachel. Congrats on the new 7D! Bird looks good to me, but might have wished he was angled a bit more toward you. You might consider cropping off some of the lower part of the nest, which could lessen the appearance of a steep capture angle and focus more on the bird.

Looks good, Rachel, great job for a first outing! :) You could trying shooting with a high shutter speed to freeze the action. It should make for sharper feather detail as the bird is coming into land.

Thanks Bill and Meesh for the kind comments. Bill - here's a repost with a crop along the lines of what I think you were suggesting. Let me know if you meant something else. Thanks

    Hi Rachel

Did well on your first outing ! I think rather than angle wing position would have helped, wings in the middle looking from the side is not their most appealing pose.. even for most birds.

Crop wise like seeing more of the nest as it the original, not sure how to cut down the nest, keep looking but don't see an appealing place !!! Best suggestion for these birds is getting in sun/wind angle and wait for them to fly !!!

Hi Rachel - the 7D can handle higher ISO - Would have considered 1600 or opened up a bit for more SS.
The angle of the bird is not ideal. Wings fully up or fully down usually makes for a more pleasing image.
Like the OP with more of the nest - watch your light angle if possible also - eliminates those shadows on the bird.
    Keep em coming :)

Thanks Al and Lance. Unfortunately the osprey glided in for the landing so not a lot of choice of wing position. I agree with your other comments as well. Unfortunately light angle wasn't possible due to trees in the way.

Hi Rachel, agree with above comments. I would crop the nest just above the man made platform...

Here's a try at the crop suggested by Dave. Please let me know if you like it better.

    Thanks again,
