Had some free time so I headed up to the high country. These guys are sure footed but he seemed to be a little leary of slipping off the ledge. 40D, 1-400L @ 400mm, f6.3, 1/800, ISO 400, +1/3 EC, monopod mount, small crop from bottom.

Wow, Steve, I wish I could trade homes with you :)
I've only seen these in the mountains is Spain when I was young and hiked up a lot.
Those were the days, like the songs goes...

Great whites and wonderful OOF rocks as habitat.

Steve - This is one of my favorites from you in a while. Just a beautiful shot that I would love to come home and see on my card download. I like the ball of fur up on its back......and everything else.

Hi Steve This animal is high on my list .... don't have one and I'm sure you need to hike at elevation to find them !! Had fun moving around at altitude !!

Like it as presented, lots of detail and great processing !! Big Congrats !!!

Hi Steve, great to see an animal like this so well captured. I liked the colours, of the goat, and the BG, and the catchlight in the eye, both ears up..and even one sure-footed hoof for detail. All good for me. Excellent shot
    Well done

What an astonishing sight, I love the way he appears to be clinging to the edge of the cliff with the intent, focussed look in his eyes. Great DOF and tonal reproduction appears spot on. I really like the different coloured mosses on the rock which add to the overall impact of the image.

Steve, I think this is a marvelous mountain goat image that stands out from most of what I have seen. The posture on the cliffs speaks about habitat and the hazards of living in the mountains. The big shed patch on top is another clue to the amazing coats these animals grow and shed every year. BG and FG are just right. Outstanding!

Excellent capture Steve... detail and exposure looks great, and I like your comp and space to the left - gives a sense of how these guys cling to the rocky ledges like they do.

Like the comp, with good detail where it counts. Steve did you blur the BG or is this 'in camera'?

    Thanks for the comments.

Regarding the BG blurring, the FG rock (you can see the separation near the front right hoof) and the BG rocks (above the line of rock cutting through the body) were pretty blurred in camera as the goat was in a sort of depression between these two areas. I did hit the whole image with a touch of NR, masking it away from the goat and rock he's standing on. A lesser degree was applied to the rock cutting through the body to remove some of the overly sharp detail of the rock although that too was somewhat blurred in camera.

Just shows what a bit of sensitive PP can do to enhance an image without changing what the photographer saw. Wonderful.
