The chick like to hide under the adults to be protected from the strong sun. In the late hours, when it's not so hot, they come out and get fed and play around a little. Marco Island. No flash was used, U chose not to remove the second catch light since it is natural. I think I read somewhere how this happens but I forgot.

Love the pose and Momma's watchful gaze. Did you add the gradient? Very nice in any case! ;)

Hehehe, no gradient, the ocean behind in the distance.

    Thanks :)

Beautifully done. Amazing that you have the talent to capture the background in gradient without adding a filter later (hope to get there sometime).
I love the protective pose of the adult, detail in whites and blacks, and the angle that the image was taken.
The chick's open mouth adds to the 'story' that the photograph tells.
I might crop a bit off the bottom, but personal preference (or could you give insight as to crop - so that I can learn?)

    Hi Fabs,

The chick peaking out makes this special for me. I also like the background with the resulting gradient the distance ocean provides. Well see and captured.

    Hey Fabs,

Oh man!!!!.....Swwweeeet!!! I am so jealous of your clean BG's! As you know, I am not the biggest fan of OOF FG's......but you and Sid are starting to convince me otherwise! Just framed perfectly!

I like the central placement of the Tern, and overall sharp, and well exposed. Good to see the chick's head peering out. The second catchlight will be from the glare off the pebbles - I think.

Beautiful, smooth gradient in BG and wonderfully surreal but life-like image. Great lesson in dealing with the difficult whites.

Deb, I used the rule of thirds (vertically) to compose in-camera.
You may want to check this thread on composition I just posted last night:

I'm loving this whole series Fabs.

The downward gaze of the parent and the great eye contact with the chick make this special...along with the perfect OOF foreground.

Personally I'd leave the catchlight alone as well but I think we'll be in the minority :)

stunning image, Fabs! Love the comp, chick with open bill, the protective, attentive interaction, and what a great BG! I to would leave the catchlight as is. I can smell the surf!

Gorgeous shot. I love the chick - squawking as if he is being squished.
Just Exceptional all the way around - and thanks for the useful composition link.
The catchlight doesn't bother me a bit.

another WOW shot from you. the low angle combined with the pose of the adult and the chick's head makes this one a winner. And oh what a background. Loved everything here.
