I have of late started to follow a wider approach in my photography, deliberately trying to capture mood and atmosphere as opposed to just a "sterile" portrait approach. I tried it with this here, with the backlight playing through the outstretched wing. Comments and critiques always welcome. The high shutter speed was pre-cautionary in case the hawk took off. Captured near Twee Rivieren in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

    Chris:

Very nicely composed image, with balance of bird and branches. Like the angled line created by the branches from RUC towards LLC. Matching angle of right wing.

Leg stretch is great, looks like morning exercise.
Dramatic backlighting. I love the luminosity of the birds left wing, might be tempted to try and bring the right wing highlights down a bit to match.

Always good to try different things, to continue to evolve our vision. Look forward to more.

    Cheers

    Randy

I like the idea and it works really well. BG, perch and eye contact look very good. I might give it a bit more room at the top if you have and wish we could see a bit more of the far wing.

Please post only one image every 24 hours. ;)

Great backlighting through the wings Chris, and overall nice and sharp. I like the colours and darker BG.

Doesn't look like a very comfortable perch but this is a pretty nice image to me. Nice detail in the darker underside and the illuminated wings and legs add a nice touch. And the image does have a nice feel.

Chris, I really like the overall feel to this one. The dark dark BG just keeps my eyes engaged with the rimlit bird and the awesome translucence of the legs. Different and captivating for me.
