There is little social welfare system in Ecuador, so there are many, many families and elderly people begging on the street.

Kids barely walking are sent out to beg for food and money.
This family seemed fairly healthy, but a great many I saw clearly were not.
    It's a very sad situation.

Sandy, powerful image and it is indeed a sad situation. I love the colors in this image, so cheerful in stark contrast to their situation. Do you think the lady is crocheting a dress for her daughter, or a shawl or some such to sell to a tourist?

Sad Sandy. I don't think we realize what a good standard of living we have in the US and Canada. Where else did you go in Ecuador?

Kerry, yes, the women all make things to sell. Some also buy cigarettes, gum, and candy to sell at a small mark-up. This family lives and sleeps exactly where they are now. They all seem to "stake out" certain places along the larger tourist-trodden streets.
Jackie, I just got back from 10 days in Ecuador - the goal was hummingbirds and other birds at remote rainforest lodges, but few of us got many good shots , for a variety of reasons.
