    Default Oystercatcher Feeding Chick

The adult has a piece of fishing line wrapped around it's ankle, it is now limping badly. I contacted the Conservationist in the area and he attempted to capture the bird. Because it can fly and is still feeding the chances of it being helped are slim.

This is very annoying to see that there is another one entangled with fishing lines. Since the little one is not independent yet, it might be better to let the bird alone for now.

Composition and interaction look very good. I might tone down the midtones and increase contrast a bit.

It has 2 chicks and is still active feeding them. (not as active as last week though)Hopefully all goes well for this one.

Denise, they were notified yesterday as well. In that we can get fairly close to the bird, I don't see why they cannot throw one of the nets over it, catch it, and quickly and remove the line. Foot was still healthy yesterday and looks the same from this image. This is such a shame. Your image is sweet tho. It takes so much effort for these birds to feed themselves and their chicks right now and to have to do it while injured must take so much out of them.

Chris and Ken, Thank you both for your kind comments.
Chris, I did contemplate the removal of the seaweed but in the end felt it might look too sterile.? Thanks.
Ken, I'm looking forward to Wako next year.:)

Lovely image Denise. Agree with comments about a bit of contrast. Nice behavior captured.

The fishing line issue is a hot button with me. I have seen so many birds killed by this that I am going to my local parks and recreation department and volunteering to help them get it all away from the birds at the local duck ponds. I have some very disturbing images of birds tangled up in this stuff... I'm not against fishing, but I find it disturbing that there are so many irresponsible people who just leave this stuff everywhere. I've already worked with the city to get the park rules amended to explicitly forbid harrassing of the birds. You would think this would be obvious, but I have seen kids deliberately try to snag ducks and geese with their fishing lures and saw one teenager grab an African Goose by the neck. I just don't get it.

Kerry, Thanks. It is very upsetting to see some of the things we see as nature photographers.

Excellent behavioral image Denise and great contact on both birds.

Agree with Axel that it's a tad hot and I think if you toned it down a hair, the contrast would settle into place on it's own.

Excellent exposure (blacks look very good) and interaction D, Don't mind the green as I think it adds interest. Hope they can get that line off. Nice work.

Perfect head angle for the chick, good head angle for the adult. Perfect timing and EXP. Sharp. Cute. Nice interaction. What's not to like? I actually like the seaweed strips. Hey, I like seaweed salad too.

Yes, I had a really good one at a Japanese restaurant in San Diego. Let's share a big one!

Hi Denise, your low angle works perfectly here, and I like how the two are facing each other. The seaweed in the BG adds interest. ( fishing line has caused endless problems with marine life. Fishermen dont seem to care about leaving bits of line lying around. )

Stuart, Thank you for your comments. I agree that the fishing lines are a problem. I urge everyone to please pick up any loose fishing line from the beach and or nesting areas when they see it. I try to be on alert for stuff like that.:)

Lovely composition, detail and feeding behavior captured. The low angle is perfect, and I don't mind the green vegetation/seaweed. Sad about the fishing line that makes life difficult or worse for so many birds, seals, etc... Very nicely done, Denise!
