    Default Piping Plover Chick

I headed out to shoot piping plover chicks this morning..and hour and a half drive after getting only 3 hours of sleep because I was dumb enough to stay up and watch the Boston Celtics loose to the LA Lakers :(

The tide was a bit higher than I figured when I arrived so they weren't out on the flats as I had hoped at first.

Image created lying down with this little cutie on top of a little rise in the sand. The lighting looks a bit flat as there was actually a weird little bit of steam rising off of the sand. I did add a small amount of contrast enhancement and curves on the subject with a QM.

I did clean up a few little bits of shell but the sliver of DOF is exactly as it is in the original file.

    Nikon D300s, 600VR, TC14EII, ISO 400, f5.6, 1/2500, CW metering, NearUniWB, +.7 EV

    Jim:

Good points by KD. I do find the bigger canvas works great with chicks.
    Beautiful exposure, nice shooting angle.

His fuzz is so soft that it almost looks like he blends into the BG, particularly on head and back.
    Nice catchlight.

    Cheers

Super low angle, and I like the feeling of loneliness of the little guy. Good fluffy detail, and I like the surrounding BG.

The fuzz on these guys is a pain in the butt with such a shallow DOF...for some reason, no matter how many of these I photograph, the only peripheral fuz that really shows up is the little tuft on their butts :)

Super sweet Jim. You know I'm a big fan of images with a narrow dof.

Great shot. The lack of color range in the environment adds a lot.

The only thing I would do different is to crop off some of the bottom. I think the oof sand is distracting.

Too bad about the Celts, but this is one sweet image. You beautifully captured and framed the sense of him standing out there all by himself. Wonderful low angle.

Cute little guy, very good angle and head angle. The sand looks almost desaturated. I would run NR on the BG.

Jim, I love the pose, details and the total cute factor. I like the clean look of the back ground. Very nicely presented.

Very nice image Jim, love the isolated feel. Can't add much to what has been said, but - yay Lakers! :D

Absolutely sweet and a minimalist comp that works very well. Cleaning the sand was a good move.
