    Default Barred Owl in Flight

This Barred Owl was just emerging into the sunlight when I caught this frame. Tough to get catchlights in both eyes. From Jim Neiger's boat.

    Doug:

I think the lighting here works very well for an owl, as we expect them to be in the dark/shadows, but the well lit facial disc really draws in the eye.

I might consider toning down the upper background just a bit more.

    Cheers

    Randy

I like the overall look and mood !! Mixed light usually doesn't work but sure like it here ... btw those things are some kind of difficult to capture .. you got the camera ready and Jim says here it comes ... very few keepers !!! :) Excellent Doug !! .. if anything would darken the corners to draw even more attention on the center !!!

Good feedback so far! Here's a quick repost with a darker BG. Improvement or not?

Hi Doug, you certainly timed the light on the face nicely. I like the sharpness on the face, and with regards to the BG, I prefer the OP with the lighter BG. In the repost, I feel the owl gets a little lost. I would maybe reduce the size of the catchlight in the owl's right eye.

great flight shot, nice sharp head, I would brighten the body so that plumage is a bit more visible, but darken the BG even a tad more, the bright tree trunks in BG can also be toned down.

    I like it Doug!

It must be a very good experience to be able to see this owl in wild flight. I made a small change in your image, can you tell what's the difference now?

Looks like you evened out the catchlights Juan Carlos. Looks good!
