The reddish egret is known for it's crazy looking antics while fishing. This is the first one I have seen with such bright coloring. He wouldn't look up in my direction so I took the shot before the light changed too much.

Nice find and colors. The little ripples compete with the bird, a lower angle would have helped and the light looks rather harsh. Photographing earlier or later in the day helps with that.

Hey Murray, what a gorgeous bird...full breeding plumage for sure! Beyond the somewhat harsh light, I'd love to see this image sharper. I don't know if the original is sharper and the degradation was during the process to save for the website, or if there are some image sharpness concerns here. Did you perhaps apply a lot of noise reduction that might have smoothed out the details? At ISO 200 you shouldn't need to touch a noise reduction program with your 20D. Did you perhaps try a few with a lower angle? I'm not sure what background you had to deal with, but it might have looked nice. Stick with it and maybe next time he'll look at you too!

Can add to reduce the saturation in the red channel The red in specific can get a bit over as it comes out of the camera Particularly see it in birds like cardinals and flamingos!!!

Thanks for the suggestion Al. I thought I would apply it to my post and also blur down the ripples a bit (and also sharpen a bit as suggested by Judd). After I finished I discovered I had applied them to a different image!. How does this compare?
