    Default Elephant's eyes are brown!

While viewing my recent photos of African Elephants I noticed that I could never really see their eyes. The eyes always seem to be covered in wrinkles or long lashes. So I was very surprised to find I had a photo that actually shows the eye, and the eye is brown!
I looked carefully at the recent close-up of an elephant and wonder how others feel about this particular crop. I tried other variations, including a larger crop but at that point one could not easily identify the animal. What do others think? And is the eye noticed much? Am I making much ado about nothing:o?
    Photographed in Tanzania, April 2010. Canon 20D, Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens @ 190. 1/800, f4, ISO 400.

Cropping at times can be very subjective, I think you've done quite well in this case.
Good lighting & texture here, with of course that eye nicely visible.

Nancy, you are quite right about the elephant eye. Very hard to get visible with colour and catch lights so well done. I don't mind your crop at all, and as Marc has said, it can be very subjective. Especially with elephants which I find particularly tricky to get.

Your crop is intriguing. It almost turns the elephant image into a 'landscape,' given the complex lines and rolling folds of hide.

    It really is quite beautiful.

Funny, isn't it, how it really is mostly about the eye, where our attention is always drawn. The tiny eye really reinforces the massiveness of these wonderful creatures.

A very minor detail -- that very small 'open' space at far upper left corner is, at least to me, a little distracting when I study the image in detail. However, I would also probably have retained it, rather than crop from the left to eliminate it. Too much detail below would have to be sacrificed.

    TFS a great photograph !

Agree with Bill on the top left corner . But otherwise the crop does justice to the image .

I like the crop. They have really tiny eyes and poor eyesight. Their hearing is amazing. Sense of smell is good too. They are a highly evolved species. If find their level of intelligence to be very good.
