    Default Springbok in Gold

Taking a break from cheetah shots - here's something else from our Kalahari trip.

The setting sun created splendid mood and light through the grasses as this springbok was settling down for the night in the open dry Auob riverbed.

Morkel, this image grabs me right from the start and looking at it closely it doesn't disappoint at all. Beautiful placement of the springbok in the frame, fantastic rim lighting on the animal and the grasses, tonal range perfect, DOF good. Is this full frame?

This is a very artistic and beautiful image. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I wondered when you might post this, as I saw it elsewhere:)

I do like the off set comp and symmetrical outline of the head, just wonder if the colour should be a bit warmer? Also be good/helpful to include what you did re exposure here Morkel for others to learn from.;)

    thanks Hilary, Steve & Harshadbhai...

Steve I warmed it up during the shooting by selecting the "Shade" white balance, and I deliberately underexposed by a full stop to get it like it is now. I used Robert's LCE to add a little pop during post-processing.

That was the bit that was missing Morkel, as others may find it helpful. :)

Re 'warmer', I just felt it looked slightly muddy in colour and that perhaps a brighter, warmer gold might be better suited, but you know what you want.

I like the rim lighting. This is a kind of retro look, 50s or 60s I guess? This is different than the normal warm gold look that we normally see. Thanks for sharing.

I did mention it under my "techs" list - "Exp -1" - just didn't clarify that extensively :)

thanks Sabya. I am inclined to look at brightening it up...this is just the look I got out of camera and I liked it.

Here is a warmer/brighter version - quick levels adjustment and warming filter as I don't have the RAW file with me at the moment...

Beautifully exposed to accentuate the backlighting !! Wish even the horns had picked up the effect :)

Hi Morkel, I did see that, it was purely for the benefit of newbies who might not know why you set it to -1EV and I thought it was worth illustrating :)

Morkel the re post does look much better and has the face looking just fine Just some detail and great feel !!!

This is what I call going with the flow and you made a fine image, dramatic light leads to dramatic images and this in no exception !!! Big Congrats !!!

Hi Morkel - I like the repost better. Beautiful light and an animal we often overlook in favor of the others (at least I do and then wonder where my springbok or impala photos are).

    Rachel

Nice head on pose. I like the fact that detail is visible in the shaded side. Also like the golden color of the grass.
