Grizzly on his way to take a nap after eating white bark pine nuts in September 2009. He stopped near the road before crossing, giving me this nice pose.

There was a crowd of about 150 people watching him eating nuts in the woods for 30-40 minutes before he came out into a clearing. I was on foot, partially behind a car, with at least 10 people next to me with their pepper sprays drawn and safety latches off (I had my spray ready too). There was no time to get a horizontal because the bear only turned toward the light for a split second--when I took this shot. A bit of a hairy situation with him on one side of the road and us on the other, but he had just eaten and I was pretty sure he just wanted a mid-morning nap at that point.
Wow, nice shot but definitely too close for comfort.
A great, close-up & intimate capture! I like the partially open mouth.
Thanks for all of your comments. I hope this doesn't fall into the "famous last words" category, but I have spent a decent amount of time observing and photographing bears in Yellowstone and Alaska and I always err on the side of caution. Well-fed bears with plenty of options to avoid conflicts with people will generally take the easy way out and just walk away, as was the case here. That being said, buy and carry bear spray and keep it at your fingertips at all times--do not leave the car without it, even for a few moments. Most importantly, use common sense. People at this same location actually approached a different grizzly about 30 minutes later as the bear was feeding just 10 yards from the edge of the road so they could get a picture with their little point and shoot cameras. Not smart.
Hi Gary,
Really like the warm colors of this. Great detail as well. Etiquette question. If the bear attacks one of the 10 armed with pepper spray, does everyone else spray the bear or run? ;)
