Took this photo of this brilliant male while testing my Canon 40D and Canon 300 f4 L IS lens which just came back from Canon repair. I am pleased with the results. I keep one sunflower feeder up during the summer months and must remember to bring it in each night so the bears do not tear it apart. I have set up a few natural perches and sometimes the birds will even use them:). The best part is I can photograph from inside the house with the windows wide open.

    Canon 40D, Canon 300 f4 L IS lens, 1/1000, f4.5, exposure compensation +1/3, ISO 500.

    Comments and instruction very welcome.

Nancy, Good to hear you got your 300 back and it's working fine. Lovely colors and pose on this one. I might selectively sharpen the head a tiny bit if it were mine. Beautiful complimentary BG.:)

Cropping is so subjective, but I would shift the bird up slightly and to the left a bit. More sharpening too. Sounds like you have a great setup, shooting from inside your house! Looking forward to more.

Beautiful bird and nice catch. Love the background and nice perch. I now shoot with the same camera and lens you have (I add a 1.4x extender)...looking forward to more from you
